If you like classical you owe it to yourself to look into Glen Gould, his recording of the Goldberg Variations puts pretty much everything else classical into a corner.

I'll give it to the man, he really knows how to work the piano-forte, but according to Hulu, that doesn't matter.

I love everything the man does. He has this habit of humming along to whatever he is playing, and sometimes it becomes rather hypnotic. There are some of his pieces where it sounds like he is moaning in pain, then ecstasy. I don't think Cthulhu meant it like that, by the way. I think he meant that skill on the instrument alone doesn't make a good song.

But who would argue that it does? You can't take any element and expect it to stand by itself. You can have the best composition ever, but if no one has the skill to carry it off effectively, you might as well trash it. I've heard expert pieces by geniuses like Mozart, Handel, etc. just butchered by how they were played and recorded. It takes all the elements together to make a brilliant and cogent piece.

As for these piano variations, I'm definitely enjoying them, very foot-tapping, though my favorite piano piece still has to be Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.
