Just because a piece is played quickly doesn't mean it's wankery. Plus, progressive metal in no way necessitates such playing, though changes in tempo/sig it does, so often you end up with great variance in speed. A band like Frantic Bleep or Subterranean Masquerade or Leprous has alot more atmosphere in it. What I love most about prog is its freedom from being constrained to a set way of writing songs. No verse-chorus-verse bullshit or consistently staying in a set time signature or even a set key.

You may bash Blotted Science, but Jarzombek's exploration of the twelve tones in The Machinations of Dimentia leads to a vibrant and never boring (for me) ride. I know it's not for everyone, but it's one of the only instrumentals that I can listen to several times through (in a row) without getting bored (excluding some classical). For me, it just stimulates the mind.

I think many people here have just been trolled when the OP wasn't even trying.

Well I must not know the definition of wankery because constant change of tempos and unnecessarily technical playing is pretty much my definition of wankery. Ugh, I'm probably just biased though. It's much easier to just assume you're right and everyone else is wrong.

Wankery is never really defined and is just a broad term used by anyone that doesn't like something because of such technical elements that a song employs, in my experience. Beats immutability in song structure, imo. But then again, I listen to music for new experiences and vibrant landscapes of sound. I'm not much for the typical, usually.

Figured you'd be a Tool fan to be honest. There are plenty of bands who create vibrant landscapes of sound without having to go over the top so to speak. Pretty much all the drone bands in existence, plenty of post-rock and ambient bands but I guess you wouldn't like any of them. Heard of Isis?

Of course i've heard of and like Isis. I like some drone, like Earth, and some post-rock, but I'd be more than open to some suggestions of some more bands as I'm not overly experienced in the area. I like alot of stoner doom that i've heard as well. I'm not saying prog is the only way to go, but some of it has alot to offer.

lol I'm travelling to Orlando (about a 2 hour drive) with my friends, and we're staying the weekend at a hotel with no parents or anything, and then going to Disney world to get trashed.
