Most rap doesn't even have appeal during the first listen for me, it's not like it offends my senses or anything, it just bores me.

What is this band named Sol Invictus? Any band named Invincible Sun is worth a listen to, just by the awesomeness of their name.

Sol Invictus is a British neofolk band, they were one of the pioneers of the genre, they throw in some generous helpings of neoclassical and industrial as well, and their best stuff comes when they mix those genres. I'm not sure if it'll be your thing though.

Here's a sample from Lex Talionis, their best album, and the only one I've listened to thoroughly:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmjlpFiHOUs

I'd recommend you download and listen to that entire album, I was going to link you to the original version of Kneel to the Cross as well, but it doesn't seem to be on youtube, just covers and the re-recorded (inferior) version.

Also, much of their earlier work has a pretty strong anti-Christian theme to it, just thought I should mention that...

Black Easter- Sol Invictus

Interesting, I might have to get into more neofolk. Very atmospheric stuff, that. I'll download that album soon.

[edit] Everyone in this thread, except Per, says that Immortal Technique is the only rap they listen to, particularly the second album. Well, here I go.

Point of No Return - Immortal Technique

Not bad, not bad at all.

The Silvershade Lynx - Nest

I seem to like bands with heavy atmospheric overtones, no matter what the genre. Any recs for that?

I don't have a huge amount of atmospheric stuff outside of the neofolk genre, but I'll provide some recs, a few of which will be shots in the dark. Tell me what you think.

Blut Aus Nord: ferociously cold atmospheric black metal, might be too harsh for your tastes, but they have a very potent atmosphere - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWTkJXl-K_I

Dead Can Dance: a neoclassical group with ethnic and new age influences, some of their stuff has a very filmscore-esque atmospheric feel to it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNxa0odpCJU

The Angelic Process: very dreamy stuff, a bit full bodied and heavy but good atmospheric shorgaze/drone stuff - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfBd7J75L9c

Jesu: Might be too full-bodied, but it's very relaxed and dreamy doom/shoegaze - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBs-cZs9m8U

Moonsorrow: Okay this song is very long, but it's very atmospheric and very dark stuff - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fywRBI8r6fA

Puissance: Again, this might be too full-bodied, but it has a very potent and quite grandiose dark atmosphere to it, rather morbid stuff - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9Xb9N9hLwA

Tyranny: Very slow ambientish funeral doom stuff, probably not your thing, but a potent atmosphere - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X03C5qF2mRY

Ice Ages: a dark electronic music project, quite dark and chilling musically, not sure if this is what you're after though... - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17v6IGUO6zM

Nadja: Quite melodic drone, this song is an abridged version but has some nice dreamy atmospheric stuff going on - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXzSVT0oG7U

Vibrasphere: Proggy psytrance, quite relaxed and cosmological atmosphere wise - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bNnKbJUMO0

Egschiglen: Generally slow and quite mournful Mongolian folk, might be worth checking out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfVB4-uCAMA

Of course, you might not like any of these, but give me some feedback and I'll have another look through my music library to see what I can find (the idea was that these cover a great variety of styles) - I didn't put any neofolk in these since there are plenty of atmospheric neofolk songs in the other thread.

The Plain of Ida - Blut Aus Nord

I'm REALLY liking this one so far. I'm new to the atmospheric stuff so I'm still not quite sure what about it that I like most, but I'm sure I'll eventually understand it.

A lot of the atmospheric stuff does take a couple of listens for everything to fall into place. Glad you liked it, looking forward to hearing what you think of the others now that I was on the mark once.

The Promise of Snakes - The Angelic Process

I don't think it's too full-bodied, I think that it's built so that the atmosphere it creates is a thick one.

That song from Dead Can Dance was great, imo that was the best of the three I've listened to so far.

So sorry to go so slow, but I've had very limited laptop access the past few days. I get on here whenever I can.

Silver - Jesu

Typical, I get the laptop and 3 minutes after the breaker for half the apartment, including the outlet the modem and router are plugged into, trips. Still isn't back on, I'm at the apartment of a nearby family friend.

[edit] forgot to say what I thought of this so far. I rather like it. It has, like you said, a relaxed, dreamy atmosphere. That's 4/4 =D

[re-edit] now on that song by Moonsorrow, WOW you weren't kidding about the length. However, it does seem nice.

That song on Moonsorrow, the length did not detract from the quality of the song, but rather, the way that it was made, it changed around enough that it was not anywhere near an issue. About even with Dead Can Dance, but in a different way.

Okay a first-thoughts on what I've listened to so far.

Blut Aus Nord: Good, but the way it adds the un-produced guitar after having the rest of that song mostly-produced felt awkward, and unnecessary.

Dead Can Dance: Awesome, it felt poetic but not inaccessible.

The Angelic Process: As a writer, I feel this band will be very helpful to inspirations, particularly as it has a unique dreamyness quality to it. So, good.

Jesu: Shit, dude, how are more people not liking this band? This is one of the most accessible and genuinely good metal bands I've listened to in a long time. Kudos to them and to you for reccing this, I will try and get more people into this.

Moonsorrow: Good song is good, they seem to be best experienced when just left running while you do a bunch of stuff. I liked how they changed the tempo enough to keep my attention on it a bit throughout the listen-through.

Puissance: Fucking brilliant. Send me moar.

Tyranny: Eh. They tried too hard on the ambient, made the mistake of toning down the guitars. Otherwise, they weren't too horrible.

Excellent, I have a good idea what to rec for my next lot, which I can do pretty much as soon as you've got through the remaining four.

Your comment about Jesu is pretty interesting, the band's frontman actually describes the band not as a metal one but as a pop one, writing his idea of catchy, accessible, structured pop songs.

I can see that, I could actually hear the pop structure as I listened to the song. I would almost describe their genre as atmospheric pop metal.

Going through the Nadja song right now. I dunno, neither Ice Ages nor Nadja were quite what I hoped for from the description. Ice Ages was really meh, I didn't even notice when it finished. Nadja has this thick, chaotic atmosphere, but I feel they relied too much on the static noise aspect of it for that. Lazy.

Vibrasphere was good, but not for me. To truly appreciate, one must probably be on LSD or something, which I have never once been tempted to use. I don't personally care whether other people use drugs or anything, but don't even try to get me to use them. Also, the wind also seems to blow marijuana smoke in through the window I'm closest to if there is anyone smoking marijuana on my block. FML

Egschiglen: Oh ho hum, just another day in the life--oh wait, I'm an American. I like this about as much as I like Vibrasphere, their designs are aimed at a niche market, neither of which I'm a part of.

I think being off your head on LSD is a requirement for enjoying most psytrance. Which is probably why most of it doesn't click with me... However I must express my amusement at you being stuck on a block full of whacked out weed addicts.

I'll be back with more recs soon.

Sabbath Assembly was, for lack of a better term, shitty. Their instrumental structure was reminiscent of a hymn, the vocals were annoying, and the lyrics were pompous from a religious POV.

Also, I know one person on my block who actually has a legal prescription for marijuana, so I'm not about to judge the rest of them for using it. She is also trying to hook me up with a friend of hers who, as she says, "her aphrodisiacs are nerds." She'll probably think I'm fucking cocaine LOL.

Okay, here are another eight:

Die Verbannten Kinder Evas: Neoclassical stuff, I'm reccing this based on your enjoyment of Dead Can Dance, quite slow and majestic, yet haunting stuff - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTv6KCfLrfg

H.U.V.A. Network: Chillout electronic stuff, may not be what you're after, worth a try though I guess - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3OIKylHqu0

My Bloody Valentine: Older shoegaze stuff, you may already know them, but here's a sample anyway - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0dJqlvOSq4

Summoning: Again, you may already know them, but if you don't they're good slow and epic yet atmospheric black metal - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHESjItTd-Q

Agalloch: Again, you may know them, but their heavily neofolk second album is worth a listen - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOI_XqLiQmE

Hexvessel: A psychedelic folk band I stumbled on, worth looking into - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZK5ziQMLmQc

Burzum: Yet another you may know, the only album I've listened to by them was the first atmospheric black metal album if my trivia serves me right, and has some nice flowing melodies to it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBll5LyMnAw

Remembrance: Very slow, gothicy doom stuff that's very melodic with some nice female vocals. Not sure what you'll think of it though - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1bDIbhEmCA

And sorry if I gave the impression I was reccing Sabbath Assembly, that wasn't the case.
